Do you like taking pictures of nature on your phone? If so, we could use your help!

City Nature Challenge is an annual, global event held at the end of April to encourage people in cities worldwide to observe and document the biodiversity present in their urban environments using iNaturalist.

Cities compete with each other to see which location can document the most species in their local area. And this year, we hope to beat all other metro areas in Texas!

From Friday, April 26 to Monday, April 29, join Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Master Naturalists, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species

About iNaturalist

iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing sightings and pictures of the biodiversity around us to help each other learn about nature. The app helps you identify what you took a photo of, and the data helps scientists worldwide learn more about our natural world.

How to Participate:

  1. Create a free iNaturalist Account

  2. Watch one of our How-to videos posted below or attend a Training Walk!

  3. Then, plan a trip to the park with family or friends on the last weekend of April and photograph what you find

  4. Upload your photos to iNaturalist

  5. All photos uploaded within the participating county lines will automatically be added to the challenge. (San Antonio metro area counties include Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Gillespie, Goliad, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Wilson.")

  6. Check the iNaturalist City Nature Challenge page to see what is being uploaded in your area!
