Puppetry & Storytelling Workshop

  • PHP Urban Ecology Center - Classroom 8400 NW Military Hwy San Antonio, TX, 78248 United States (map)

Join us for special 4 hour Puppetry & Storytelling Workshop with guest artist Mobi Warren at Phil Hardberger Park - Natural Area! Meet by 8:45am at the Urban Ecology Center building, located at 8400 NW Military Road.

This special one-time workshop will be led by Mobi Warren, an eco-puppeteer, community naturalist, and poet. She shares her puppets with our monthly storytelling-in-nature program and leads our park's annual Poetry Walk. She serves on the Eco-puppetry Committee of the National Capital Puppetry Guild and is co-founder of Stone in the Stream, a regional collective of poets and artists committed to the environment.

Using found objects from nature as well as reusable, non-toxic, and biodegradable materials such as cardboard, participants will build a hand puppet using simple craft techniques under Mobi's guidance. Inspired by the puppets of artist Ashley Bryan (participants will receive a copy of his book "Ashley Bryan's Puppets") participants will also work on composing a song or poem for their puppet that embodies the wonder and spirit of the natural world. We will utilize natural items like seed-pods, branches, leaves and grasses sustainably collected offsite, along with up-cycled fabrics and materials to create our own nature puppet.

We will have a 30 minute lunch break at noon. Please bring your own lunch, or feel free to step out to grab something from the near by grocery or restaurants. We will finish the day, after lunch sharing our creations and artworks.

Participants are encouraged to also bring any materials from home to personalize their creation or share, including but not limited to: scrap fabric, yarn, ribbon, old costume jewelry, twigs, vines, dried flowers, feathers, scrap bones, pruned wood bits, natural but recycled materials such as bamboo chopsticks or cardboard tubes. Some materials will be provided.
