Children's Vegetable Garden

Children's Vegetable Garden

Set at the park’s Historic Homestead, the PHP Children’s Vegetable Garden is where children 7 to 14 years old get their hands dirty as they learn every aspect of gardening, from planting to harvesting. With the help of volunteers from the Bexar County Master Gardeners, children begin the morning each Tuesday with a hands-on activity in the garden, followed by a related lesson.

There are two program seasons — fall (begins in September) and spring (begins in February). Visit this page for Children's Vegetable Garden registrations.

The PHP Children’s Vegetable Garden is a cooperative project of San Antonio Parks and Recreation, Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and Bexar County Master Gardeners.

Elementary School

Our Elementary programs give children a hands-on opportunity to learn all that nature has to teach.  Offered to 7 to 10 years old, its topics vary from geology, to wild life, to trail safety. Set in the Salado outdoor classroom, each lesson is reinforced with a kid-friendly activity.

Growing Up Wild

The Growing Up Wild series is offered for 4 to 6-year-olds. Class sizes are limited and registration is required through this website.

A donation to the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy of $3 per individual or $5 per family is suggested.

Our Middle School programs, for students 10 to 14 years old, inspire students to learn about and value the natural environment. Topics include earth science, biology and conservation. Because kids learn best by doing, each session begins with a lesson in the Salado outdoor classroom and continues with a relevant hands-on activity.

Starting Out Wild is an educational program that fosters toddlers’ love of nature. Offered to children 18 months to 3 years old, the program’s basic format has four parts, including: learning, hiking, a craft project and snack. The nature-filled lessons are highlighted with music and movement, plus a story on both ends. It’s a fun-filled morning in the park for the little ones and their parents.

Summer is better outside! Camps at Hardberger Park combine lessons with fun, hands-on activities to inspire a love of nature and a better understanding of the natural world. There is a camp for just for your child's age: 2 to 3 years, 4 to 6 year, and 7 to 10 years.
